El Camino Updates

Elky_work

Been doing some more work on the Elky. Took a bigger hit on taxes this year than I’d expected (by a lot), so I’m doing things in a much different order than I’d expected. Then I had the weekend of epic water leaks into the cab, so priorities changed again.

The latest work was fun. You can see in the image that I removed about 1/4 of the bed of the truck and the interior panels of the passenger door (again). The bed needed to be scraped clean and completely sealed to hopefully prevent the giant leak that used to come through there (we’ll see!). Luckily, I found no real rust … some surface rust forming, but that’s it. The door now “works”! It can be opened from the outside, so that’ll be nice :).

On the “not so successful” side this time, I got the e-brake adjusted to the right tension, but found that the ratchet which holds it in place is broken. That’s not looking like a repairable piece … it’s all riveted together … so I’ll be replacing the whole part. I also wasn’t able to attack the leak coming from the front left fender. Turns out, to take off that fender, I also have to remove the hood and the front of the car. No time for that just yet. Soon ….

Got to find time to pull that front end apart, and replace the rubber in the door seals. Then I’ll be able to put the carpet back in!

Otherwise, it’s running great. Once I fix the leaks (to prevent any possible rust!), I’ll be moving to the gauges and electrical. Right now I kind of have to guess how fast I’m going and how much fuel I have. And those are my only two gauges. I’ll fix that. 🙂
